With nearly 40 years of experience in WWE, executive Bruce Prichard has witnessed firsthand the numerous changes within the promotion. One of the most significant transformations has been in the treatment of female wrestlers. Once relegated to a sideshow focused on eye candy, WWE’s women’s division has gradually evolved to be treated with the same seriousness as the men’s division, highlighted by women main eventing major events like WrestleMania.
On the latest episode of “Something to Wrestle With,” Prichard discussed the evolution of women’s wrestling in WWE and expressed optimism about the future of the division.
“I think that the athletes currently participating are tremendous athletes,” Prichard noted. “Their focus is on becoming WWE superstars and being able to perform and steal the show in the ring—not just because they are beautiful or have a beautiful body. The female talent we have now are some of the most incredible athletes I have ever seen.”
He added, “You walk through and see some of the women that the general audience hasn’t even seen yet, and you think, ‘Oh my god. This future’s bright.’ There are some really hard-working, dedicated young ladies that I’m excited for. It’s just a different presentation and a different world.”
Prichard also had a message for fans who may be slow to embrace the changes in women’s wrestling.
“Let it go,” he said. “There’s nothing wrong with that. I think it’s a beautiful thing. It allows us to grow, and I think we should grow.”
